An Exclusive Interview With Hip Hop Music Producer Young Gentleman

Gentleman is a hip hop music producer from the East Coast who specializes in media marketing & promotions. From branding development to both digital and physical distribution (With dreams of becoming a licensed A&R in the future)

Where did you grow up, and how did you get the name Young Gentleman aka Agent Leman?

I spent the first half of my childhood in Houston, Texas, and the second half in Southern New Jersey.

Gentleman was a name I have always admired from a child, to hear it from my family, peers & complete strangers lets me know I am living up to the name – As a producer Young was added because I felt I needed a first & last name.

Agent Leman is the name I go by outside of the producing. Although still music related for the most part from website/mobile app creation to marketing & promotion (logos, mixtape covers, flyers) “Agent Leman” defines who I am(AGentleman)

 What is your musical background?

I’ve been doing this since I was a pre-teen, from playing beats to my peers in highschool to releasing
projects on the same media sites we grew up on like desert storm radio & thisis50.

I’ve pretty much done everything as a producer with the exception of being on t.v. and having a major album placement. I’ve been on almost all industry mixtapes , media streaming sites, both digital and print magazines, and got the wink & the gun from a lot of musical focus is remain humble and be prepared when placement time comes.

Musically, what are your biggest influences and who are your favorite musicians?

I have a ton because I pull inspiration from everywhere. It trickles down my family tree starting at my grandfather, but to answer your question I would say my parents have been the biggest influence on my music. As far as my favorite musicians my whole network gets busy..I have a laundry list.

How would you describe your own style?

My style of instrumentals have a futuristic ambiance . The vibe can either make you want to dance or sit and meditate.. I would describe my beats as uplifting mood music.

In what ways has your newest music changed from when you first started?

I’ve been doing this for almost two decades now so plugging up my external hard drive is like stepping into a time machine, so I’m constantly comparing the two.
Since day one i’ve been focused on perfecting my craft, the most noticable change is the quality of my sound. I never hesitate to go back and vibe out to older projects as I remember making each one.
6What would be your dream venture in which to perform? I would say being an a&r.. my network game is top notch and I already have access to a lot of gem artists, having the connects and credibility to actually put them in more opportunities would be my end goal.

Which famous musicians do you admire? Why?

Timbo, Justice League, and Heatmakers all created their own do not need tags from none of these producers to know it’s their instrumental.

Which famous musicians have you learned from?

My family, again too many to name but everyone has contributed to who I am, and my brand. I was under management w/ my uncle twice, and have atleast two records with most of the artists in my family tree.(with the exception of a few but in due time)

Have you been in competitions? Fleadh’s? Any prizes?

I have dominated a few beat battles and enjoy attending as well. Of course your nervous until your slot time is up but the networking, drinks, and the fact you are hearing everyones body of work in venue monitors..IT’S BEAT HEAVEN! I prefer to do the one on one meetings but the beat battles are definitely something to be a part of.

Do you perform well in public? Describe those occasions?

No matter the environment if you have a handful of people together someone needs beats, or knows someone who does, so much like a dj I am the life of the party. Fellow super producers Cardiak & Omen have both described my beats as futuristic, soulful, and energetic, in a showcase I was in 2012 hosted by istandard.

With that said yes I perform exceptionally well in public, just show me the aux port. Amongst a plethora of other things having my own mobile app “YG’s MMA” has set me aside from I am my own competition.

Also being blessed with enjoyable opportunities like chopn it up with you makes this all worth it , and appreciate you featuring me on the site…talk to ya later!
